A Sump Pump to Prevent a Flooded Basement
Every man dreams of owning his own home someday where he could live and take care of his family in peace. Most of the times, his dream house would include a swimming pool for the kids to swim in. A number of men are successful enough to fulfill such a dream. But for others, they just settle for the house that they can afford and be contented with an occasional indoor pool brought about by a flooded basement. This indoor pool however is not the type where you let your kids swim in since flood waters are contaminated with bacteria and mold that could affect the health of the kids.
A flooded basement is common to homes that are located in areas with very high water tables. Areas such as these can only let a small amount of rain infiltrate the ground before the ground gets fully-saturated and its excess water overflows along the surface of lawns or yards. This overflow can enter through the cracks in the foundations of the basements eventually leading to a flooded basement. Flooded basements are also common in homes near lakes and rivers that swell up and overflow towards houses after heavy downpours.
Homeowners that have homes near lakes and rivers, and have a high water table should make their basements water-tight in order to prevent a flooded basement from occurring, or to make the cleaning up of a flood easier. One way to do this is to install a sump pit in the basement. Depending on the dimensions of the basement, more than one sump pit may be needed.
A sump pit is a pit that is about three feet deep with an eighteen inch opening dug into the basement. The opening is usually covered with a drain tile that would allow water to go down the collecting tanks underneath the basement. Inside the sump pit is the submersible sump pump that is set to switch on if the collected water level inside the tanks reach a specific height. The sump pump will then pump the excess water out of the house through hoses that have been installed. If the sump pump is working properly, a flooded basement can be prevented from occurring.
If a flooded basement still occurs even after installing a sump pit, homeowners should investigate how rapidly the waters rise in their basement. If water is rising at a rate faster than the sump pump pumping it out, then it is advisable to install another sump pit, or to make other adjustments. Homeowners should consider hiring an expert contractor that specializes in preventing a flooded basement if flooding still continues on a regular basis.
Except for a natural flooding disaster that is out of the control of homeowners, a flooded basement is the result of small amounts of water continuously coming in the basement. A sump pit with a working sump pump is still considered to be the best weapon in preventing a flooded basement from happening.
